The Washington Nationals clinched their third division crown in five years earlier tonight and look to have a bright future ahead of them with Bryce Harper and Max Scherzer steering their ship to victory after victory.
But what if I told you that they could bolster their lineup by adding Mike Trout? You probably wouldn’t believe me, I get that. Trout has led the American League in WAR (Wins above replacement) since 2012 while winning his only MVP award in 2014. The only time the Angels made the playoffs was in Mike Trout’s MVP season, where they were eliminated in the first round by the Kansas City Royals, who then ended up winning the pennant that season. Since then, the Angels have traded away their farm system making it barren with little depth. Their major league club also hasn’t provided much of anything as they are currently in fourth in the AL West and in line for the 8th pick in the 2017 MLB Draft. The Angels could keep Trout and trade away aging players like Albert Pujols and Jered Weaver or trade away younger assets like Kole Calhoun or Andrelton Simmons. I believe that they should actually trade Trout, and to the team I believe is the Washington Nationals.
The Nats have one of the better farm systems in baseball and already have had a few players graduate from their top 30 (Trea Turner, Joe Ross, etc.) and a few solid players still in it (Lucas Giolito, Victor Robles, etc.). They could spin a trade with the Angels by sending Joe Ross, Victor Robles, Lucas Giolito, Trea Turner, and Michael Taylor to the Angels for Mike Trout and a potential starter such as Nick Tropeano. The Angels get a four major league ready players and a potential star in Robles seasoning in Triple A readying to knock down the door to the majors. Trout would immediately impact the Nationals with his stellar play in Center Field and his big bat next to Bryce Harper in the lineup making a dynamic duo of the best players in the sport today. This would give the Nationals an opportunity to win their first ring and the Angels the opportunity to rebuild as they look to contend in the future.
